How Coaches Can Monitor Client Progress Remotely Using Coach Catalyst

We Suck At Nutrition

Yes I said it, we suck at nutrition.

I mean we are great at dolling out information but so is the rest of the world.  Just google how to lose fat and see how much info you get.

I just got 117 billion – yes BILLION – results.

To put that in perspective there are a little over 7 billion people in the world.  That means there is over 15x more articles on fat loss than actual people in the world.  WOW!

This kind of info compels me to ask the question, do we really need more information?  Is 120 billion articles going to change the world?

My “without thinking reactionary” answer is hell no!  We need more coaches and better coaches.

But, my “slow down and think about it” answer is yes we need information but delivered differently in amounts the client can actually take action on.

We need information that reinforces the skills and actions our clients are taking.  We need something scalable where we can actually coach a ton of people and change more lives.

Most of us here are in the fat loss industry.  Honestly, that is where you make a living in the fitness industry. Unless you are super specialized the majority of your clients want to lose the muffin top.

This brings me to a second conundrum.  Most of us are exercise professionals first and maybe nutrition second. We are running workouts, not counseling sessions but training a ton of fat loss clients.

Times Are Changing

With that professional in mind I think we need to discuss exercise and fat loss.  Don’t get me wrong, I love exercise.  I love it so much I own gym.  But when we look at exercise with our fat loss goggles on it isn’t all that great.

Frankly, it sucks.

Exercise is great for a whole host of other ways to make ourselves more awesome but the research is pretty clear when it comes to exercise and fat loss.  It doesn’t work. Exercise alone without any dietary changes does not induce much, if any, fat loss at all.

Maybe people eat more because they are exercising or because they are exercising they are more sedentary during the day. I don’t know the mechanism and frankly I don’t really care why. If you don’t change your diet at all and just start exercising you probably won’t lose much weight at all.  There will always be the anomaly but for most people most of the time this is the case.

 What To Do

Since most of us are in the fat loss and exercise business that leaves us with a little conundrum.  Let’s be real here, when Sally comes to you she most likely isn’t looking for the workout of her life but she is looking to lose her muffin top, or get off meds, or lose the spare tire.

But we need to address the nutrition side of things so we continue to doll out the information, we continue to link to another article.  We keep people in the cycle of consuming without action.

We can blame it on the clients.

[pullquote align=”normal”]They never listen to what I say, I gave them a 300 page ebook on exactly what to do![/pullquote]
[pullquote align=”normal”]I can’t do it for them, they are just lazy and don’t know how to prioritize! [/pullquote]
[pullquote align=”normal”]They don’t want it bad enough! [/pullquote]

All of these may be true in its own right but in the end if our clients are not getting what they come to us for, WE ARE FAILING.  Maybe you don’t see it that way but thats how my team and I view it.

What If It’s Not The Client?

Maybe it’s not the client. Just maybe we need to found the finger at ourselves.  Maybe its OUR approach that is failing the client.  Maybe we need to stop force feeding more information down their throats thinking that if you give them the same piece of info one more time the client might actually follow through.

Maybe we need to spend more time thinking about how can I provide more focus and accountability for my clients.  If we truly want to make our gyms different this is where we are going to build a purple cow (read Seth Godin’s book Purple Cow).  This is where you can build something remarkable.  This is why clients will continue to pay us for a very long time.

What if we have the client focus on a singular task and actually hold them accountable to that focus.  Then we give them a community to help each other be successful and a coach to oversee the whole thing.

I already know what you are thinking.  That is just going to add more time to my day if I have to keep track of another thing.  You know what, with the right system I think putting effort into something like this is a game changer.  It can also make you a boat load more money.

Trying to figure out a manageable system has been something I have been trying to figure out for the last two years.  I have done everything under the sun.  Handouts, food journals, questionnaires, you name it we tried it.  None of it stuck and clients eventually fell off because it was an administrative nightmare to try and keep everyone accountable.

So, my best bud and I set out 2 years ago to start creating something we could use in our own gyms that would make this process easier.  Like most people, we dragged our ass on it for 1 year thinking about it and finally in the last year started bringing it to life.   It’s not there yet but it’s getting close.  We are creating something for the innovators in the industry, the top 10%. The people who take responsibility for their clients results and don’t just provide workouts.   We are looking for those who want to change more lives, build a purple cow for their business, and want a better way more scalable way to do it.

If that is something you are interested in we would love to share in this journey with you and build something that helps you change lives.  We plan on opening this game changing software only to the pre-launch list in early January.  If you would like to be the first to know when it goes live and help us build something remarkable sign up for the pre-launch list below.

In the meantime, what ways/tools are you using to provide focus and accountability among your clients?  How are planning to be remarkable in 2016?
